Being a Writer in a World That Doesn’t Read

Well, I suppose the modern day version of a non-fiction writer is an internet blogger – especially considering my millennial label. Since I grew up an avid reader and writer, I have always found some comfort and release in both. When seriously contemplating being a writer (meaning published, as anyone can “write”) I started to wonder whether it would actually be worth it? I mean, do people even read anymore?

When I look at my own reading, it has gone significantly downhill since I was a child. I no longer have a good book on my nightstand; it has been replaced with my remote access to Netflix and DVR. Sadly, backlogged episodes of Breaking Bad, Lost and Californication have taken the place of evening reading.  In fact, it pains me to admit, but Netflix has taken the place of most of the mentally stimulating and productive things in my life. When I do find myself reading I’m embarrassed to say it’s usually something useless via Facebook news feed links. Or on a more intellectual day, LinkedIn home page updates. I do also frequent http://www.sunnyskyz.com to read their Good News section. We all need more positive stories in our day.

My life, thus far, has been filled with interesting moments and conversations that are definitely share-worthy. If I had a nickel for every time I heard  “You should write a book!” then I would have at least a dollar by now, maybe two. Unfortunately, when I sit down with the intention of starting a novel I am overcome with the thought of who would publish it? Who would read it? If I am not writing a “Top 30 Meme List” then would it really capture any of the millennial audience? And if I did capture their attention, how long could I really hold these A.D.D. minds?

Enough with the questions. I am choosing to write here. On the world wide web. And perhaps it will be read, perhaps it will not. But at least it will be written.

Enjoy,

-Megan Jane

  1. Superb post but I was wanting to know if you could write a litte more on this subject?
I’d be very grateful if you could elaborate a little bit further.

    Bless you!
